What is your call to adventure?
You likely have something in your life that is causing pain or discomfort - whether that's feeling stressed and overwhelmed by your patient load, grappling with a decision to move to another country or trying to build your practice.
What if you thought of this discomfort - this obstacle, struggle or the quiet voice in your mind that won't leave you alone - as something you're being called to engage with.
Like Frodo's quest to destroy the ring, or Moana's mission to save her people.
In the story framework "The Hero's Journey" (or Heroine's Journey) that these movies are based on, this is known as The Call to Adventure.
What if you looked at your struggle as a Call to Adventure?
What if life was asking of you to step up in some way - to expand your capacity and capability, or consider possibilities you haven't before?
What if this obstacle wasn't getting in the way of the life you're trying to create, but is actually an integral part of (or pathway to) the life you're creating?
This is not to glamorise or minimise the painful things we experience, but it's to recognise that the struggle is there - regardless of how we feel about it.
So why not take an approach to it that helps us engage more fully with our lives; to learn and grow from the difficult things we go through?
(plus, how much more fun is it to act like you're a character in your favourite movie??💃🏻)
We tend to have this illusion - consciously or not - that life will start on some distant day in the future, when we're finally happy, fulfilled and calm. When we eventually get to that place where we have everything we want.
But life has already started, dear clinician, and it's asking of you to answer this call. To engage fully with your life, no matter what is currently happening in it.
So I'd love to know... in the movie of your life - what is YOUR call to adventure? 🎬
P.S. THE PODCAST IS OFFICIALLY LIVE! 🥳 The Call to Adventure is one of the things I explore in the intro episodes, and I go into why your brain might be resisting this call as well as some tools that will help you along the journey.
This podcast is about all the things we never learned at University about being a clinician - navigating burnout, feeling lost and ruminating on whether we're on the right path, feeling emotionally triggered by patients, stepping up to be a leader and change-maker, how to show up at work when your own life feels like it's falling apart... and so much more.
In other words, if you're a human who is clinician-ing - this podcast is for you 😉 You can listen by clicking the button below & make sure to follow to be updated about new episodes!
